Legal Modifications (No Approval Needed)
Standard replacement parts, window tinting (within WA limits), aftermarket wheels (same size/load rating), dash cams, and audio system upgrades.
Modifications Requiring Engineering Approval
Suspension lifts over 50mm, engine swaps, significant power increases (over 20%), turbo/supercharger additions, roll cages, and LPG/CNG conversions. These require a Vehicle Standards Information Sheet (VSIS) and often an engineer's certificate.
Illegal Modifications in WA
Removing catalytic converters, window tint below legal limits (35% VLT front, 20% rear), excessive lowering, non-compliant lighting (coloured headlights), and removing airbag components.
Insurance Implications
You MUST disclose all modifications to your insurer. Undisclosed modifications can void your entire policy — not just the modified component. Some insurers specialise in modified vehicles (Shannons, JUST Car Insurance).
Our Advice
If you buy a modified vehicle, check that all modifications are documented and legal. At NORTH Motor, our vehicles are sold in standard or manufacturer-approved configuration unless explicitly disclosed.
