What Is an Extended Warranty?
An extended warranty provides mechanical breakdown coverage beyond the manufacturer's warranty period. It covers the cost of parts and labour for specified mechanical and electrical failures.
What's Typically Covered
Engine, transmission, differential, steering, cooling system, electrical components, air conditioning, and fuel system. Premium plans may also cover turbochargers, navigation systems, and sensors.
What's Not Covered
Wear-and-tear items (brakes, tyres, wiper blades), routine servicing, cosmetic damage, and pre-existing conditions. Always read the PDS carefully.
Cost vs Benefit
A typical extended warranty costs $1,000-2,500 for 3 years. A single major repair (transmission: $3,000-6,000, engine: $5,000-15,000, turbo: $2,000-4,000) more than covers the warranty cost.
When It Makes Sense
Extended warranties are most valuable for European vehicles (higher repair costs), vehicles over 5 years old (more likely to need repairs), and buyers who want predictable running costs.
