Towing Capacity Basics
Your vehicle's towing capacity is the maximum weight it can safely tow. Never exceed it. Key numbers: braked towing capacity (trailer with own brakes, typically 2,000-3,500kg for SUVs/utes), unbraked towing capacity (typically 750kg), and tow ball weight (downforce on the tow bar, typically 10% of trailer weight).
Best Tow Vehicles
Toyota Land Cruiser: 3,500kg towing, bulletproof reliability. Ford Ranger: 3,500kg, comfortable towing with 10-speed auto. Toyota Prado: 3,000-3,500kg depending on variant. Isuzu MU-X: 3,500kg, excellent diesel economy while towing.
Essential Towing Equipment
Correct-rated tow bar and ball, electric brake controller, towing mirrors (mandatory in WA when the caravan is wider than the vehicle), weight distribution hitch for heavier loads, and safety chains.
WA-Specific Rules
Maximum speed while towing: 100km/h. Trailers over 750kg must have brakes. Weight distribution must be within limits (no more than 10% overhang). Towing mirrors must provide rear visibility.
