How Much Is WA Stamp Duty?
For vehicles valued under $50,000: 2.75% of the dutiable value. For vehicles $50,000-$100,000: $1,375 + 6.5% of the amount over $50,000. For vehicles over $100,000: $4,625 + 6.5% of the amount over $100,000.
What Is the Dutiable Value?
The higher of the purchase price or market value. This means you can't avoid stamp duty by getting a 'mate's rates' price on a contract — the government assesses market value independently.
Examples
$20,000 vehicle: $550 stamp duty. $30,000 vehicle: $825. $50,000 vehicle: $1,375. $75,000 vehicle: $3,000.
Exemptions
Transfers between spouses, pensioner concessions, and some disability-related transfers may qualify for reduced or nil stamp duty. Check with the WA Department of Finance for current concessions.
When Is It Paid?
Stamp duty is paid at the time of registration transfer. When buying from a dealer, it's typically included in the drive-away price.
