Before You Drive
Walk around the car slowly. Check panel gaps (misaligned panels indicate previous accident repair), tyre wear patterns, paint condition, and under the car for leaks. Open and close all doors — they should feel solid and aligned.
Starting Up
Cold start: the engine should fire immediately and idle smoothly. Listen for unusual ticking, knocking, or grinding. Check all warning lights illuminate briefly then go out. Test all electronics: aircon, radio, windows, mirrors, and infotainment.
City Driving
Test low-speed manoeuvrability, turning circle, and parking. Check visibility in all directions. Feel for smooth gear changes (auto) or clean clutch engagement (manual). Test the brakes: they should feel firm and progressive.
Highway Driving
Accelerate to freeway speeds. The car should track straight without pulling. Listen for wind noise, tyre noise, and engine refinement at cruising speed. Test adaptive cruise control and lane keeping if equipped.
Rough Roads
Drive over speed bumps and uneven surfaces. Listen for clunks or rattles from the suspension. The ride should be composed, not bouncy or crashy.
After the Drive
Check under the car again for new leaks. Feel the brake discs (carefully — they'll be warm) for excessive heat on one side. Trust your gut feeling — if something felt off, investigate further before buying.
