Roundabout Rules
Give way to traffic already on the roundabout. When turning right, indicate right on approach and left when exiting. Failure to indicate correctly is a $150 fine.
Mobile Phone Laws
Using a handheld mobile phone while driving is a $1,000 fine and 4 demerit points in WA. This includes texting, calling, and even touching the phone while it's in a cradle. Only fully hands-free voice commands are legal.
Keep Left Unless Overtaking
On roads with a speed limit of 90km/h or more, you must keep left unless overtaking. This applies on the freeway — sitting in the right lane at the speed limit is illegal if the left lane is clear.
U-Turns
U-turns are only legal in WA where there's a U-turn sign. At traffic lights, you can only U-turn if there's a specific U-turn sign. Otherwise, it's a $150 fine and 3 demerit points.
Double Demerits
WA has double demerit periods during public holidays (Christmas, Easter, long weekends). Speeding, mobile phone use, and seatbelt offences attract double demerits during these periods.
