New Registration
To register a vehicle in WA, you need: proof of identity, proof of purchase (receipt/contract), vehicle inspection (if previously unregistered or from interstate), and payment of registration fees and stamp duty.
Transfer of Registration
When buying a used car, the registration must be transferred within 7 days. Both buyer and seller must complete Transfer of Vehicle Licence form (MR11). The buyer pays transfer fee ($19.80) plus stamp duty (2.75% for vehicles under $50,000).
Interstate Transfers
Vehicles from other states must pass a WA vehicle inspection and be re-registered. This involves an identity inspection at a WA vehicle examination centre.
Renewal
WA registration can be renewed for 3, 6, or 12 months. 12-month renewal offers the best value. You'll receive a renewal notice before expiry. Late renewal attracts additional fees.
Costs
Annual registration: $360-850 depending on vehicle type. This includes compulsory third-party personal injury insurance. Additional CTP premiums apply for vehicles used for business.
