Tyres
Check tread depth — you need at least 3mm for safe wet weather driving (legal minimum is 1.5mm, but 3mm should be your personal minimum). Ensure pressures are correct; underinflated tyres hydroplane more easily.
Wipers and Visibility
Replace wiper blades if they streak or skip. Apply a hydrophobic windscreen treatment (Rain-X) to improve visibility in heavy rain. Check that all lights work — demister, fog lights, headlights, and indicators.
Brakes
Wet brakes are less effective. Have your brakes inspected before winter. Ensure brake fluid is at the correct level and has been flushed within the last 2 years.
Battery
Batteries work harder in cold, damp conditions. If your battery is over 3 years old, have it tested. A weak battery that barely starts in summer may fail in winter.
Driving in Perth Rain
Perth drivers are notoriously bad in rain (we don't get enough practice!). Increase following distance to 4 seconds, reduce speed by 10-15%, use headlights in rain (it's the law), and avoid sudden braking or steering inputs.
